A well-known German supplier of production facilities has automatized the parts management in an automotive  plant in Belgium.

In that process containers, filled with parts, are supposed to be unpacked automatically. Within the plant, different sizes of containers are used which can be stacked on the pallet in different patterns, mixed patterns are possible as well.

The robot cannot make use of any reproductible position data to unpack the containers. In order to unpack the containers, it is necessary to make use of machine vision which provides this reproductible data. The EISENMANN AG, in cooperation with the KeySysTech GmbH, developed a solution for this task. The machine vision application provides data about the amount, position, height and size of the containers in 3D.

The application is similar to the unpacking of wheels, but in this case, the machine vision unit is not fixed to a linear axis, but directly to the robot hand. This is favorably as the space is limited and this solution needs less space.
